This week, we're trying a new format for Lab hours, where we make a more conscious attempt to collect everyone's goals for the session, and follow up at the end to check in on how it all came out. This helps us all learn from each other, or answer questions we weren't didn't know we needed to ask. It's also extremely rewarding to watch people pick stuff up and run with it.
Here's how it went down this week:
- Kay was looking for ways of allowing her site's members to advertise the services they are willing to provide for others. We discussed creating a new content type, but decided that, since she's already using the Bio module, we can add checkboxes for user's pages right on their profile, and allow others to find them using Views.
- Jay wanted to make his changes from last week's work on the Daily Planet site. Using the Viewfield module, he was able to create biography pages for article authors, with automatically-updating feed of articles they've written.
- LindaGail looked for guidance on organizing fields on views, specifically the placement of images using the CCK Imagefield.
- Kera returned from a brief absence, ready to rock on the Homegrown Heartland site. She's working with content organization and thinking about setting up some drop-down menus.
- Kristin is also working with menus, content organization, options for directing people visiting the site from outdated link URLs, and had some mail and newsletter questions.
Given the interest shown when we did an around-the-room summary at the end of the session, we will look to explore the following topics in upcoming weeks:
- How to use the Roadmap and other features for tracking Drupal site development projects in the Redmine open source online project management system (Advantage Labs and our clients use this system for project tracking)
- More on views, specifically exposed filters and use of the CCK viewfield (with and without arguments)
- Use of both Google Analytics and Drupal's internal statistic feature to track Drupal site traffic and usage
