This week's Lab Hours: News, Views and Social Media

More fun in the sunny meeting room! Most of the members wanted to learn more about newsletter handling, so Lab Hours started out with Allie going through the modules and steps needed towards implementing a mail solution.

  • Tammy had several Mail list issues which were resolved! She has decided: "When in doubt - ask Allie". And, she learned that the "from" address and other settings shouldn't be changed on the mailing list node form. These are all carefully controlled by the ezmlm server, which we set up for customers.
  • Tim had some mail list questions and wanted to do a "majors" content type search. For the "majors" content type search, Tim learned more about the flexibility of views - and how to expose a filter for visitor flexibility. He got some good views going. Next week will be exciting: using the automatic view tabs to create a page, complete with each exposed filter on a tab.
  • Kay wanted to learn about social bookmarking, service links, how to add an news list unsubscribe, and add the logo and sitename. She learned how to put a description in the mailing list subscription area to add help text on the user page in the unsubscribe area. She is still working with news. In the theme - if you have a site name and a slogan selected in the Garland theme, the logo will use this information as the alt tag. Otherwise, there is no way to add an alt to to the logo through configuration.
  • Lindagail wanted to add embedded video and audio, plus a myspace service link. After turning on the modules, she quickly deduced that these were fields for content types, and needed to be added for the desired content types.
  • Maryann is adding flash videos on her site. She also wanted to get a serach box in the header with a blank logo. We need to do research on the best video module to use when you want to store the videos locally.
  • Jake has the TCDP newsletter going, and wants to add an interface to add "latest news" nodes from the archive. With Allie's help, he also wrote a module! Now he can add a google map to the top of any view without hacking any modules
  • Kirstin wanted a block to appear for one group of 15 people only. She also wanted to position the block on front page "user group" for all users. She also tackled some Views questions, and learned how to make slick-looking and functional searches using exposed filters.
