This week's Lab Hours: Attachments, Annoucements, Access!

Another productive day at Advantage Labs HQ!  As the lab hours attendees list grows, I've been a little worried that we'd get spread too thin.  As it turns out, this actually provides more opportunities for users to learn from each others' trials and successes, or brainstorm solutions.

  • Tammy is looking for ways to paste the URL's for file attachments into the body of nodes.  She's creating new nodes to hold attachments, but would prefer to be able to put links to uploaded files inline.
  • Kristin has the opposite problem!  Through some act of magic or chance, she was able to upload content inline, but wasn't able to restrict access to groups.  As it turns out, it wasn't magic, it was the webfm module.  We're recommending following Tammy's lead and create "attachment" nodes, which can be filtered, categorized, translated, and revisioned.
  • Patrick joined us from the class, and is tackling a multimedia library site.  We worked with him to set up the embedded media field module, which lets you create and categorize remotely-hosted media files.
  • Maryann is setting up Nice Menus and a customized home page.  Thinking she was going to have to use panels or another custom configuration, she found that it's just a matter of stashing blocks into the content region and styling them to float left.
  • Lindagail is setting up her newsletter, and finding custom URL setups to be .  She also downloaded the Service Links module, and "it's beautiful!"
  • Jay, who has been using the event module for tcdailyplanet.net , is setting about creating a community calendar using the date and calendar modules.
  • Kay is completing the setup for her newsletter.  Like Tammy, she found that the subscription block appeared to different users through different scenarios.  Like Tammy, she found that the key is access control!

On the way out, Kristin said she felt like she got a lot done.  I hope everyone felt that way, because that made my day!

The client wanted this site to have a similar look and structure as that of IBM.com: drop down menus, some animation, and the ability to add features in the future.

The site utilizes blocks, nice menus, image cache, teaser pages, flash swf and flash video files, lists,  and the drupal zen theme (with customized CSS). It is Drupal 5.x.
