Tip from the Archive: Free and Open Code Editing Software

At Lab Hours this past Wednesday, several people asked about text editing tools that would make working on Drupal theme files (page.tpl.php, template.php, style.css) easier.  I recommended the tool I use, Komodo Edit.  It dawned on me that I had written about this before-- last May.

Well, I've been using Komodo Edit since then for all my themeing except for CSS for which I have a better tool (the not-free CSS Edit).  It's easy to use and has been a great utility.  Since there is a brand-spanking-new version of Komodo Edit and it seems to be relevant for many, here is my original post with links to Komodo and other tools: http://www.advantagelabs.com/more_sophisticated_editing_tools_for_developing_drupal

Link to Drupal.org handbook pages on software tools

While looking up something else on drupal.org this morning, I found the following handbook page with oodles of info and configuration instructions on many software packages that are helpful to those developing Drupal sites:

http://drupal.org/node/147789

Read through the entire thread to find many recommendations and caveats. This is also a good time to mention that on the Labtime email list, Christopher Mitchell put in a plug for jEdit, a java based tool he uses to edit code. It is noted with a link on the drupal.org node linked above.
