Wednesday Lab Report: Feeds, Organic Groups and fields

The pre-Thanksgiving Lab provided much to feast on -- pun intended; we talked about feeds -- and much to be thankful for. Take a look at the live Lab pad or feast on the notes below.

Wednesday  Lab Hours Session -- November 23, 2011 / 4-6PM CT

  • Configure group for 2012 Conference
  • Review fields for Event and Organization content types
  • Review and configure user profiles display

  • Sponsor concept
    • Goals:
      • list sponsors of each Event
      • generate list of sponsors by event for IATP use
    • sponsors are:
      • organizations
      • have a level (gold, bronze or 1,2,3)
      • related to specific event (group)
    • to do this we could:
      • create a "sponsor" content type with the following fields
        • organization (node reference to the org content type)
        • level (free tag taxonomy? to account for this year we call it Gold next year we call it Supreme or...  text field as list with defined values)
      • configure sponsor content type to be a "group" type so you can publish a sponsor to the specific Event (group)
      • create view displays to show the various sponsors
    • HOWEVER, it makes sense to look at the ability to add fields to the relationship between the organization and the group
      • add a sponsor level field (text only so it can be flexible for whatever sponsorship levels will be called in the future)

Maryann King http://www.emkayandco.com

  • how to set up rss feeds going both ways
    • coming from an outside source
      • Talked through what is possible using core Aggregator module and discussed additional functionality possible with Feeds module
      • Need to understand what the organization wants to do -- what will site be pulling and what do you want to do with it?
        • will the content become nodes on site? etc.
    • going out - i.e., someone wants to have a feed from your site
      • Demonstrated how feeds can be added to view displays including the front page (where this site needs one)
    • 1 calendar shared internally, best practices
      • `what does this mean?
        • staff only to see it and to add things to it
        • dates for deadlines of internal projects
          • meetings
          • etc.
      • Given this, Organic Groups may be the way to go or...
        • another tool that is more geared toward project management since the site is public facing and this work is internal???

  • updating a theme
